This parking garage may look like a
low-tech operation, but nothing could be farther from
the truth. Every time someone drives in or out of the
garage, takes a ticket, or pays for parking with cash,
credit or a debit card, one or more computers is
involved. Keeping track of garage traffic, financial
transactions, 24-hour staffing requirements, and making
sure the entry and exit gates operate properly is
extremely computer-intensive.

"When we first hired ESI, in
early 1996," says the Director of Finance of a busy,
mid-sized law firm in downtown Boston, "we had a pretty tough time
with our technology. We were much smaller about
11 lawyers and only the secretaries and accounting
staff had PCs. Half our network was still using coaxial
cable while the other half was on 10BaseT. We ran everything
on DOS WordPerfect® was our main off-the-shelf
application. We had no e-mail and only one file server
running NetWare 3.12 that contained everything
we produced."
