White Paper: Want to get MetaFrame working with NFuse and Citrix Secure Gateway, with SSL. using Linux instead of IIS for NFuse? Download this whitepaper explaining how we did it.

Are your users having problems accessing local drives and printers in Citrix?

The newer versions of the Citrix client allow you to control from the client how much access the Citrix server session has to the local workstation. When the new client in upgraded or installed and the user logs on to the Citrix server for the first time they will be asked to choose access permissions to the workstation. Some users choose: "No Access" and "Do Not ask again".

For all version of the client and server all you have to do to solve this problem is find the file WEBICA.INI on the client workstation and delete it. Next login, the user will be prompted again to choose access permissions. There are other techniques, too, but this one works across all versions of Windows.

Improve your computing experience with shareware.

Everyone in the computer business has a collection of software "utility" programs she swears by. These are programs that enhance the usability of your computer, either by adding a feature to another program or to the operating system that "should have" been there already, or by improving upon a feature already built-in. There are literally tens of thousands of these programs out there. Some are free, and others are not.

Here are some of our favorites from the freeware and shareware categories. These programs are all available for download from a number of websites. Note that shareware is NOT free; if you try a shareware program and decide to keep it, you are required to register and pay the author for it. One or more of these programs may make your computing experience better.

PowerDesk®, from (V-Com is an unbelievable utility offered for free. This program can be used as a standalone application or as a replacement for Windows’ Explorer. Like Explorer, PowerDesk lets you see and manipulate the files and folders on your computer (and your network), and you can view your "tree" in a single window or in a split windows with folders on the left and folder contents on the right.

The program does much more than Explorer, though. For example, it allows you to work with two windows simultaneously (both of which can be split), making it much simpler to drag and drop files to different locations. Other impressive features include a customizable toolbar on which you can drag and drop shortcuts to your favorite folders and applications, a command-line, a "filter" command, allowing you to see only files that match certain criteria, a menu option that allows you to print the list of files you’re viewing (why has this NEVER been included in a version of Windows???) and much, much more.

Ontrack offers a "Pro" version for sale, which adds file viewers and other enhancements, but the free version is the deal of the decade.

CyberKit, from Luc Neijens, is technically "postcardware," not freeware. That means that while you don’t have to pay for the software, if you’re going to use it, you need to send Mr. Neijens a postcard letting him know. This program is filled with useful TCP/IP tools needed to troubleshoot network problems, problems connecting to the internet, or just to look things up. Built into the program are Ping, TraceRoute, Finger, WhoIs, NSLookUp, QoD, Time, NetScanner and DBScanner utilities. None of the utilities is as full-featured as you’ll find in an expensive commercial package, but they all work well and are simple to use.

Ad-aware, a free program from LavaSoft (www.lavasoft.nu), will scan your computer’s registry and hard drive for unwanted "spyware" programs that keep track of your internet activity and, in some cases, relay that information to outsiders. These programs reveal information about you that you very well may want to keep private. Ad-aware will — at your command — remove any or all of these programs for you. Download it and scan your system — you’ll be surprised to discover that you probably have spyware on your system already.

Another program designed to put you back in control of your internet browsing experience is Pop-up Stopper. From PanicWare (love that name!), this fabulous utility does only one thing — it prevents websites from launching pop-up windows in your web browser. These annoying windows — which appear all the time on commercial sites — clutter your screen and require you to manually close them. Pop-up Stopper, another free program, rids you of this annoyance while still allowing you to launch pop-up windows manually when you want them.

Ever want to create a PDF file, but don’t want to shell out $250 for Adobe Acrobat™? Win2PDF, from Dane Prairie Systems (www.win2pdf.com), allows you to do just that. This great little program creates a "virtual printer" on your system. You print any file to this printer, and it creates a PDF file instead — readable by anyone with Acrobat Reader. The only limitation of this program is that the free version appends an extra page to your PDF file indicating that it was created with Win2PDF. To avoid this penalty, you can purchase the commercial version for $35 — still a great deal.
